The Digne-les-Bains detention center has had a composting platform since September 2026, an initiative by Provence Alpes Agglomération aimed at waste reduction.

As part of its waste management strategy, Provence Alpes Agglomération assists public facilities in composting their food waste on-site. The agglomeration provides the necessary equipment, trains staff, and oversees the composting platforms, including supplying dry matter and performing turning operations.
This program has already equipped around twenty public structures, such as nursing homes (EHPAD), schools, and administrative offices. The most recent addition is the Digne-les-Bains detention center.
Installed in the courtyard of the detention building since September 2026, this new platform consists of three bins: one for depositing food waste, one for maturation, and one for storing shredded material. The facility's kitchen team, which prepares daily meals for approximately thirty inmates, now utilizes this equipment.
This initiative is expected to valorize nearly 4 tons of food waste annually, thereby reducing the amount of household refuse destined for landfill. Beyond waste reduction, this project opens avenues for developing gardening activities and utilizing the compost within the prison.
