The fight against colored canker, a disease caused by the fungus Ceratocystis platani, is a national obligation. The City of Aix-en-Provence must therefore proceed with the felling of infected plane trees to preserve healthy ones.
The felling campaign will take place in two phases. The first will concern the city center, from October 19 to 22. The provisional schedule includes the felling of trees in various locations: Place Jeanne d’Arc on Monday 19th, Avenue Victor Hugo and Avenue Maurice Blondel on Tuesday 20th, on the Cours Mirabeau on Wednesday 21st, and finally Avenue des Déportés de la Résistance Aixoise on Thursday 22nd.
The second phase will take place at the Parc de la Torse, from November 16 to December 4. These works, with a provisional duration of three weeks, will begin on Monday, November 16, and are expected to conclude on Friday, December 4.
Colored canker, present in France since the 1940s, threatens plane tree heritage in several regions, including Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. This fungus is responsible for the death of thousands of trees each year.
The disease spreads through spores entering the tree via wounds or naturally through the roots. Infected wood debris, moved by tools, machinery, or natural elements, plays a key role in its dissemination. This is why the City requires companies working near plane trees to systematically disinfect their equipment.
