The Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolis, through its president Nicolas Isnard, announced on Thursday, September 24, the end of free public transport across its entire area. This decision, described as 'brutal, unilateral, and without any consultation,' has sparked strong opposition.
In the Pays d’Aubagne et de l’Étoile region, the fare-free policy for buses and trams, implemented nearly 18 years ago, is seen as a concrete success and part of the territorial identity. The petition highlights the potential negative impacts on the purchasing power of families, workers, students, and retirees, especially amidst rising prices.
It also warns of a potential increase in car traffic and pollution in the Huveaune valley, and a lack of respect for local municipalities and users, as the decision was made without prior consultation.
Signatories are calling for an immediate freeze and withdrawal of this unilateral decision, as well as the full maintenance of free transport on the entire network of the Pays d’Aubagne et de l’Étoile.
