In response to the increase in fires, particularly during the summer, Pompiers13 developed the SERIFEN program (Awareness of Natural Space Fire Risks). Initially aimed at elected officials and local stakeholders, this practical training on appropriate behavior during fires has been extended to the general public this year. The SERIFEN TOUR marks a new phase, with weekly meetings held at fire and rescue centers across the department.
"Prevention is paramount; it's an entire ecosystem," stated Richard Mallié, president of Pompiers13, during the first meeting in Gémenos. He emphasized the importance of these sessions in informing the public about measures to take before, during, and after a fire, recalling the mass displacements observed during the summer. Antoine Buttigieg, deputy mayor of Gémenos and representative of the Communal Forest Fire Committee (CCFF), praised the initiative, noting that 75% of the municipality is forested, making prevention particularly crucial.
Attendees at this initial event received a practical presentation on the correct behaviors to adopt during a fire, supported by visuals and case studies prepared by the Natural Risks and Forest Fires group. Discussions were held with several firefighters, including Lieutenant Colonel Xavier Joseph, Lieutenant Frédéric Palazzolo (head of the Gémenos center), Vincent Pastor, and Lieutenant Véronique Arnaud.
The SERIFEN TOUR will continue on Friday, October 2, at the fire and rescue center in Fuveau at 6:30 PM. The full schedule for October is available on the Pompiers13 website.
