Since November 2, 2026, 193 junior doctors have begun their fourth year of general medicine residency in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, an initiative aimed at strengthening healthcare services, particularly in underserved areas.

This fourth year of training, under the junior doctor status, allows future general practitioners to consolidate their skills through supervised practice. They conduct consultations, provide care, and carry out prevention actions, balancing training with interventions in other local healthcare structures.
In Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, the Regional Health Agency (ARS) has partnered with the universities of Marseille and Nice, professional bodies, and health insurance to ensure optimal reception for these junior doctors throughout the region, with a priority for underserved areas. Local authorities and state services have also supported this initiative.
In total, 160 junior doctors are undertaking their 4th year in general medicine in community settings, distributed across the region's six departments: 14 in Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, 4 in Hautes-Alpes, 38 in Alpes-Maritimes, 38 in Bouches-du-Rhône, 39 in Var, and 27 in Vaucluse. Approximately 80% of them practice in underserved zones. Around thirty additional projects involve other practice modalities, particularly in maternal and child protection (PMI).
An additional sixty junior doctors will join these ranks in May 2027. The reception of these future doctors aims to introduce them to the region's territories, general practice conditions, population needs, and local quality of life, with the goal of encouraging their future settlement and enhancing the attractiveness of underserved areas.
