To commemorate the 500th anniversary of Adam de Craponne's birth, the municipality of Grans has organized a series of tributes. This hydraulic engineer, likely born in 1526 and based in Salon, is renowned for initiating the construction of the canal that bears his name, a significant project that greatly contributed to the region's development.
In the 16th century, western Provence faced severe water supply challenges due to its arid climate and irregular water sources. It was in this context that Adam de Craponne, a Provençal gentleman and hydraulics specialist, undertook the creation of this vital canal. In 1554, he received authorization to divert a portion of the Durance River's water to supply the surrounding territories. The initial canal spanned approximately 62 kilometers, with later extensions, including branches to Arles and Istres, expanding the network to about 145 kilometers, supplemented by numerous secondary channels.
Adam de Craponne's vision led to the establishment of numerous mills, fostering regional economic growth. Irrigation transformed the Crau region, enabling new lands to be cultivated and the emergence of pastures. His mastery of water management positions Adam de Craponne as a true pioneer of major hydraulic works and a celebrated benefactor of his region.
The event program features several highlights: a conference titled "Craponne, 500 Years Ahead? From Controlled Water to a Resilient Territory: History, Uses, and Future of the Crau" presented by historian Marylène Bonfillon and Symcrau director Charlotte Alcazar, on Tuesday, October 20th at 6 PM in the Salle Germaine Richier. On Thursday, October 22nd at 6 PM, the hall of Salle Germaine Richier will host the opening of the exhibition "From Water to Light: Nuances of Provence" by Atelier Josine Palud, which runs until December 31st.
Finally, on Saturday, October 24th at 11 AM, a new artwork celebrating the 500th anniversary of Adam de Craponne will be inaugurated at the Rond-point du Mouliné à blé, near the Municipal Technical Center.
