Activities at the sludge and green waste treatment site operated by SAUR in Tourrettes have been causing persistent nuisances for several years, including odors and fly proliferation, impacting the daily lives of residents in Tourrettes, Saint-Paul-en-Forêt, and Fayence. In response to this ongoing situation, approximately 150 people mobilized this Tuesday, November 3rd, at 11 a.m. in front of the site. The gathering included mayors from the Pays de Fayence, community and municipal officials, residents, and associations, such as SOS Jas de la Maure.
François Cavallier, president of the Communauté de communes, Camille Bouge, mayor of Tourrettes, and Mr. Martel, mayor of Saint-Paul-en-Forêt, collectively reaffirmed their determination: "We will not give up!" The president emphasized the commitment to the residents, stating, "We cannot tolerate residents being subjected to such nuisances. We will not abandon you until this is resolved!"
This mobilization is part of an effort that began in June 2021, when the Communauté de communes council issued an unfavorable opinion on the project for treating sewage sludge and green waste. Despite numerous letters, meetings with SAUR representatives, and two formal notices from the DREAL, no improvement has been observed. In April 2026, the Communauté de communes council reiterated its opposition to the installation and change of operator.
Last September, François Cavallier sent a letter to SAUR on behalf of the nine mayors of the Pays de Fayence, requesting a sustainable solution to end the nuisances. He also warned the company that, failing a satisfactory solution, the local authority might terminate the current contract. During the rally, he outlined two potential outcomes: bringing the site into compliance through enclosed and covered facilities, or the closure of the installation. He stressed the importance of "maintaining faith in the rule of law" to achieve results.
A first step forward seems to be emerging, as SAUR recently responded to the President's letter, expressing readiness to propose solutions. Dialogue can now begin, with the expectation of concrete proposals and lasting results for the residents. The objective for the elected officials of the Pays de Fayence remains unchanged: to achieve the effective and sustainable cessation of the nuisances suffered by the inhabitants.
