The Verdon Regional Natural Park hosted Philippe Schmit, Inspector General for Environment, from October 27 to 29, 2026, to evaluate the Gorges du Verdon's application for the Grand Site of France label. This visit marks an important step for the preservation and visitor management of the area.

Philippe Schmit's report will soon be presented to the Superior Commission for Sites, Prospects, and Landscapes (CSSPP), which will provide an opinion on the label's attribution. The three-day field visit facilitated fruitful exchanges with elected officials from the seven concerned municipalities and partners, highlighting the work accomplished since the launch of the Grand Site Operation in 2009.
Several emblematic sites, including the Point Sublime, Couloir Samson, the Blanc-Martel trail, the Jabron valley, and the Route des Crêtes, were explored to showcase the actions undertaken. These actions aim to improve visitor reception, organize tourist activities, and preserve landscapes and natural environments. The restoration of the Cavaliers farm by the Conservatoire du littoral and the labeling of the Auberge du Point Sublime as Valeurs Parc were also highlighted.
This collective project has been driven for nearly 25 years by the seven municipalities of the Gorges du Verdon: Aiguines, Castellane, Comps-sur-Artuby, La Palud-sur-Verdon, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, Rougon, and Trigance, with the support of the State, the Région Sud Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, the Departments, and the intercommunalities.

"This candidacy is not an end, but a new step in our shared responsibility towards the Gorges du Verdon."

Bernard Clap · President of the Park
The next step will take place in early 2027 with the presentation of the candidacy to the CSSPP. This event will coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Verdon Regional Natural Park. Obtaining the Grand Site of France label represents a renewed collective commitment to preserving landscapes, sustainably managing visitor reception, and valuing local heritage.
