An autochthonous disease is contracted within the national territory without prior travel to an area where the virus is circulating. Transmission occurs through the bite of an infected tiger mosquito.
In Marseille, two autochthonous cases of dengue were reported in August. Mosquito control operations and door-to-door campaigns have successfully closed this episode without new cases.
In Saint-Raphaël (Var), two autochthonous cases of chikungunya were reported to the ARS on September 25. No new cases have appeared following interventions, but vigilance remains necessary in this area.
In Cavalaire-sur-Mer (Var), 15 autochthonous cases of chikungunya have been detected since September 22. The identification of recent cases in a new circulation zone necessitates increased vigilance in the commune.
Upon declaration of the first autochthonous cases, management measures are immediately implemented to limit virus spread. The Interdepartmental Entente for Mosquito Control on the Mediterranean Coast (EID) conducts mosquito control operations on public roads and in private gardens.
Teams from the ARS and Santé publique France, with support from the town of Cavalaire-sur-Mer and the Intercommunal Hygiene and Health Service, are conducting investigations to identify potential secondary cases and raise awareness among residents.
Enhanced awareness campaigns for healthcare professionals in the area have also been conducted. Health facilities, private doctors, medical laboratories, and pharmacies are mobilized to increase vigilance and facilitate diagnosis.
The ARS Paca and Santé publique France urge all doctors in the region to maintain vigilance for any suspicion of chikungunya, even in patients who have not traveled. Rapid diagnosis and reporting are key to effective control measures.
Everyone can protect themselves and their loved ones by limiting virus circulation: apply a skin repellent, especially in the morning and evening; install mosquito nets for newborns or bedridden individuals; wear covering clothing. Anti-insect bracelets and ultrasonic devices are not recommended.
It is advised to consult one's doctor immediately in the presence of suggestive symptoms: high fever, joint or muscle pain, rash, headache.
To prevent mosquito proliferation, stagnant water must be eliminated: empty plant saucers and anything holding small amounts of water, store items that can collect water away from rain, and tightly close or cover water reserves.
