The SNSM station in La Seyne-sur-Mer mobilizes 35 volunteers, with 28 operational for interventions. Their operational area extends from the bay of Sablettes to Pin-Rolland, covering sites like Deux-Frères. Station president Eric Bonieu explained to the mayor the importance of the semi-rigid boat, currently moored during the summer season. This equipment allows for rapid intervention, as seen recently when a sailboat captain suffered a medical emergency 1.8 km offshore, and the family was towed to safety.
This semi-rigid boat, powered by two 115hp engines and fueled by two 120-liter tanks, can reach speeds of 30 knots. It is equipped with a real-time GPS and can tow vessels up to 12 meters in length.
The rescue system is complemented by two other zodiacs from the fire department based in Fabrégas, as well as the first-class lifeboat « Notre Dame de Bonne garde ». According to Vanessa Gerst, vice-president of the station, this lifeboat, over 13 meters long, is unsinkable and self-righting. It can navigate in extreme conditions up to 10 nautical miles (18 kilometers) and is equipped with 2 diesel engines of 330 hp, allowing it to reach 25 knots.
The SNSM association, recognized as being of public utility, relies on the commitment of its volunteers who save lives daily at sea and on the coast. Public support is essential for the renewal of their rescue fleet. The Sea Rescuers are ready to respond 365 days a year.
