This donation, comprising first editions, leather-bound volumes, and artist's books, showcases Jean Proal's work and his connections with prominent artists of his time. Notable pieces include L’Or de vivre, illustrated with nine wood engravings by Anna-Eva Bergman, and Farandole, a poem accompanied by a lithographic suite by Hans Hartung.
This legacy, resulting from Anne-Marie Vidal's efforts to promote the writer, complements the existing collection of Jean Proal's works at the media library. It establishes a heritage fund dedicated to the author, intended for preservation and future cultural initiatives.
Born in Seyne in 1904, Jean Proal, whose literary output is closely tied to the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region, authored about ten novels, as well as short stories and interviews. Settling in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in 1950, he befriended Louis Aragon, Hans Hartung, and Anna-Eva Bergman, leading to several collaborations between literature and visual arts.
Recognized during his lifetime, Jean Proal received the Grand Prix du roman de la Société des gens de lettres in 1953 for De sel et de cendre, and the first Grand Prix de Provence in 1961 for his entire body of work. He passed away in 1969.
An exhibition dedicated to Jean Proal, curated by the departmental media library, is on display at the François-Mitterrand media library until October 30.
