An exceptional discovery has been made on the coast of the Côte Bleue Marine Park: a marine turtle nest has been confirmed on Sainte-Croix beach in Martigues. This is the first nesting recorded on this coastline and the 9th confirmed nest in 2026 on the French Mediterranean coast.
The first clues emerged on September 28th with the observation of a small hatchling on the sand by walkers, followed by another spotted in the water by a sentinel observer from the Côte Bleue. After several days of searching, eggshells discovered on October 13th led to the location of the nest.
More than 60 empty egg membranes were found, indicating the emergence of numerous loggerhead turtle hatchlings. This discovery highlights the importance of reporting any sightings of marine turtles or hatchlings for the monitoring and protection of these species.
